fengguan

凤冠 鳳冠

A type of traditional Chinese headwear for women. It was worn mainly by noblewomen during the Ming Dynasty for ceremonies or official occasions; it is also worn by brides during weddings.

The are several different variations of the fengguan's design, so the design can vary greatly. Traditionally, the number of dragons, pheasants and phoenixes on the hat denoted the wearer's rank.

Fengguan means "phoenix crown", a name that originates from its adornments: phoenixes made of inlaid kingfisher feathers, as well as gold dragons, beaded pheasants, pearls and other gemstones. Sometimes they are adorned with decorative wings - called diyi - instead of beads.
