epaulettes
Ornamental shoulder pads seen on many military uniforms. Typically seen in soldiers from the Imperial era (1600s - 1800s). Frequently depicted with a fringe trim. The term is derived from a French word for "little shoulders".
For the rectangular strips without fringe trim that indicate a certain rank or division, see shoulder boards. For plain cloth tabs, see plain epaulettes.
