drop pod

A vehicle typically seen in science fiction used to rapidly deploy personnel (or equipment) into a battlefield from above, usually from spacecraft in orbit. As their main purpose is rapid insertion, they're often depicted as single-use.

The idea of drop pods first came from Robert A. Heinlein's novel Starship Troopers in 1959.
