The third game in the Dragon Quest series, originally released in 1988 for the Famicom and later brought to North America (as Dragon Warrior III) in 1991. Enhanced remakes have since been made for the Super Famicom and Game Boy Color, though only the latter was released outside of Japan. Much later, a HD-2D remake for modern consoles was released. The game was massively popular in Japan, becoming one of the best selling games of its generation.

This game was the first to include a gender option for the main player-character. It also introduced character classes to the series: Warrior, Priest, Mage, Martial artist, Merchant, Gadabout, and Sage. The Super Famicom remake introduced an additional Thief class while the HD-2D remake introduced the Monster Wrangler.
