A person who investigates crimes and looks into records. They are either employed by the police or by a private individual. Police detectives are commonly depicted with a police badge.
Sherlock Holmes is one of the most well-known detectives in fiction and thus influences the traditional detective's outfit, consisting of a deerstalker hat, a capelet, and a smoking pipe and magnifying glass. In film noir, private investigators often wear a fedora and a trench coat.
