darius (series)
Darius is a series of side-scrolling shoot 'em up video games, released by TAITO. When it started, its primary difference from other top first-generation scrolling shooters was the ability to select different levels on the way to the final areas.
Another distinguishing characteristic is that the enemies are all based off marine life, with very few exceptions. This includes the distinct, large mecha bosses with often bizarre names.
Many entries in the series feature an exceptionally wide screen. The games have the player control some type of Silver Hawk ship.
The series is also known for originating the boss warning in video games, its own version being a meme itself:
