chinese paper-cut

剪纸 窗花

A traditional Chinese folk art dating back to when paper was developed. Also called "window flowers" because the they are often used to decorate doors and windows. It's done by folding a piece of paper multiple times and cutting out shapes to form a pattern or an image, which is why patterns are often symmetrical.

Paper cutouts may be done with any color, but red ones are especially common and they are used to celebrate festivals like the Chinese New Year. Paper cutting and paper-cut decorating remain popular New Year activities in the modern days.
