An altar is a table or platform adorned, decorated with religious imagery and items for the presentation of religious offerings and rituals. It is found in places of worship like churches and temples.

• For the non-Christian, miniature household version, use kamidana instead.
• Not to be confused with pulpit (lectern-like object).
• Not to be confused with the iconostasis (a portable wall for displaying multiple icons in Orthodox churches).
