ace of spades

A playing card depicting the Ace of spades.

In many decks the ace of spades has a unique design that sets it apart from all other cards in the deck, even the other aces. The spade symbol is typically much bigger, and often has intricate lines and patterns reminiscent of an illuminated manuscript. This tradition dates back to the 17th century.
