The MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam is the first transformable lead Gundam-type mobile suit mecha in the entire Gundam franchise, and the titular mobile suit of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985). It also appears in the Gundam ZZ (1986) sequel series.
The Ζeta's design was revolutionary in many ways (both in and out of the anime), and in the UC timeline looked very different from previous models of the Gundam type of Mobile Suit. One example of the physical difference is that the Zeta has a ventless mouthpiece and a white, sharp chin. This head design is also present in some mobile suits of the Project Zeta such as the S Gundam. The transformation ability and the suit's great speed is its signature quality, as its transformation is fluid and integrated into its combat style often giving it grace unrivaled by most MS.
The Zeta Gundam transforms into a fighter-like form called the Wave Rider Mode. This grants the Zeta not only enhanced speed and mobility, but also the ability to make an atmospheric re-entry from space on its own without the aid of ballute packs or other external re-entry systems. With the Zeta Gundam's powerful Biosensor activated, the Waverider Mode can be used as a deadly weapon called the Waverider Crash.
This mobile suit has many pilots for the record, but is famously known to be designed and piloted by Kamille Bidan during "The Gryps War" in Zeta Gundam. During "The First Neo Zeon War" in Gundam ZZ it was piloted by Gundam Team members Judau Ashta and Roux Louka.
In real life, it was designed by Fujita Kazumi and Nagano Mamoru. Its transformation was planned by Ookawara Kunio. It is said Tomino Yoshiyuki wanted a lead Gundam able to transform in a vehicle given the extreme popularity of variable geometry robots in the mid 80s.
