It was released as 7 animated movies in Japanese cinemas as well as Blu-ray and DVD volumes from April 2012 onwards. The 26 episodes aired again on TV after all the volumes were released.
The new series is notable because it re-tells the events from the original series' first season, but with brand new animation techniques and more modern character, spacecraft and mecha designs. It also introduced many new female characters.
