    トゥーランドット

Italian opera by Giacomo Puccini with libretto (the text part) by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni. First premiered in 1926.

The story is set in a mythical version of Beijing heavily influenced by Persia*. The plot centers around a fallen prince trying to court the daughter of the Emperor of China, the titular Princess Turandot. Failure means death.

*It was not exactly uncommon for China to be portrayed during that time as a hodge-podge of "oriental" cultures that winds up being more "Middle Eastern" instead of Chinese.
