Tameshigiri is the Japanese art of target test cutting, popularized in the Edo period (17th century) for testing the quality of Japanese swords like katana. In present day, it has evolved to focus on demonstrating the practitioner's skill with a sword instead.

Common targets for Tameshigiri include (but not limited to) goza, bamboo, paper, and water-filled bottle.
