The Staff of Parthalan is the spear-like staff used by Hawke in the "Destiny" trailer for Dragon Age II. In the trailer, Hawke uses the staff as both a melee weapon and as a mage's staff against the Arishok. Originally used by Hawke's ancestor "Parthalan", hence the name of this staff with two different accounts being retconned by Bioware for marketing reasons.

"During the Exalted March, the Tevinter Empirium [sic] was in chaos. Magister Parthalan and two high-ranking magisters were sent to Kirkwall to put down the slave uprising before it spread to the entire empire. However, their legion never arrived at Kirkwall; no one knows what happened to the party, Magister Parthalan—or his fabled staff". —From Codex entry: Staff of Parthalan for Dragon Age II in-game lore.

"Magic has always run strongly within the Hawke bloodline. The tales passed down from one generation to the next tell of an ancestor named Parthalan, a mage who long ago helped to unite Ferelden under the rule of King Calenhad. Parthalan eventually vanished into legend, fleeing the persecution of the Chantry, but his legacy remains in the hands of his family - along with his hope that one day, mages would achieve the freedom that King Calenhad intended to bring to all men." — In the Official Dragon Age website. Released in March 8, 2011 as a promotional downloadable content.

The design of the staff is quite unconventional for any traditional mages; Starting with a Red Orb on the staff. But its most unusual feature is a Bladed spear point at the staff's end; both for close combat and intimidating, making as a hybrid weapon for Warrior or Mage class. The height of this staff is roughly 185cm or 6ft 1in, based off on Garrett Hawke's height—making this staff 110% taller than Garrett Hawke by design.

In the trailers and arts, Hawke wields the staff with the blade pointed away from his body. In-game, he uses it with the blade pointed towards his back, slashing enemies with it when in close proximity. Interesting enough, Hawke used this staff as a two-handed sword in the Dragon Age Legends—a flash based Facebook and Google+ game set in the Dragon Age universe.

In-game, it is a promotional content for Dragon Age II that can be unlocked for free under Rewards in the Career section of the Dragon Age Keep or available as a free download under the Extra Content tab in Origin program. If the world state imported into Dragon Age: Inquisition has Hawke as a mage, they will use a similar looking staff to this one, although the orb at the top will be light blue instead of red.
