A war between Mexico and the United States from 1846-1848 over ownership of the land in the south-western part of North America, which at the time formed the northern half of Mexico. The United States was victorious in the conflict, but the annexation of so much new territory destroyed existing compromises over the spread of slavery, which would in turn lead to the American Civil War less than 15 years later.
