Tomari Shinnosuke was an ace police detective demoted to a special investigations division due to demotivation following an incident where one of his colleagues was crippled. When his new team was assigned to look after cases of people suddenly becoming immobile, however, Shinnosuke was given a chance to reignite his passion with the super-car Tridoron and its sentient belt to transform into Kamen Rider Drive and fight the Roidmudes, monsters connected to the freezing incidents.
In a departure from series tradition, Drive is the first Rider to primarily use a car for transportation, and uses Shift Cars to either change his appearance and/or arsenal.
