A light novel series by Yanai Takumi, based on his own online novella, illustrated by Izuka Daisuke.
In August 20XX, a portal to a parallel world known as the "Gate", suddenly appeared in Ginza, Tokyo where monsters and human warriors wearing ancient armor poured out of the portal, killing everyone in their way and trying to claim the area as their own. This would later be known as the "The Ginza Incident". Immediately after the attack, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces launches a counter attack, repelling and pushing the invaders back to the Gate and reclaiming Ginza.
A manga adaptation is adapted by Sao Satoru. A TV anime adaptation aired Summer 2015 with a continuation in Winter 2016.
Due to the overall theme, the series have been chosen by the Japan Self-defense Force as a promotional and a recruiting tool for the JSDF since 2016.
An anime adaptation of the sequel novel series "Gate Season 2 - Jieitai Kano Umi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri" (lit. "Gate Season 2: Thus the Japanese Self-Defense Force Fought in Their Sea"; English title: "Gate 2: Tides of Conflict") was announced in the works July 2025.
