It is strongly hinted that Chestnut is actually the avatar of the Night Horror, a powerful Ethereal that cursed Lucia's tribe, the Nightwatchers, in the past by giving them the ability to cause other Ethereals to see the Nightwatchers as fellow Ethereals but also causes them to sleepwalk into the Hollows to be corrupted if they ever sleep at night.
