She is cool, laid back, and even somewhat aloof and/or easily irritated, in contrast to many of the American shipgirls who came before her. She has a particular aversion to night battles and Japanese destroyers, Akatsuki and Yuudachi in particular, in reference to her historical fate. She is often compared to Ryuujou, who also has brown hair and a similar haircut but a flat chest.
The historical Atlanta was heavily damaged after sinking Japanese destroyer Akatsuki during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. She was sunk on her captain's orders later on the same day.
