When a character's gender cannot be reliably deciphered. For example, a character wearing full armor has no obvious male or female traits (unless they are wearing a boobplate), or someone who's barely in the frame.
Use androgynous instead if the character's traits are visible but it's not possible to make a clear judgement on whether they're male or female.
