Named for Aizuwakamatsu Castle (会津若松城, Aizu-Wakamatsu-jō), also known as Tsuruga Castle (鶴ヶ城, Tsuru-ga-jō), at the centre of Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, which was constructed in 1384 by Ashina Naomori, its name originally Kurokawa Castle (黒川城), and demolished in 1874. The tenshu, the largest tower of the castle, was reconstructed in 1965.
