In late January 2023, a high-altitude balloon of Chinese origin drifted across North America, causing a major diplomatic incident between the United States and People's Republic of China.
The balloon was shot down by a US Air Force F-22 Raptor over territorial waters near South Carolina on February 4, 2023.
