A fish with protrusions resembling whiskers around the mouth. In Japan, there is a folk belief that "catfish become agitated before an earthquake strikes." Furthermore, there exists a legend that "a giant catfish dwelling deep underground causes earthquakes by thrashing about." The kaname-ishi serves to pin down this catfish, rendering it immobile.
