A barcode scanner is a device designed to read printed barcodes, decode the data contained in the barcode, and send the data to a computer. Commonly seen used at the checkout counter of stores. These devices can be stationary, such as those embedded in grocery store checkout counters, or handheld, like the gun-shaped type connected to a store's cash register.
