He has several names, secret identities, and clones throughout the Gundam series. He is usually depicted with some sort of eyewear or headwear (usually sunglasses or his trademark helmet), concealing his eyes.
His birth name is Casval Rem Deikun and he has blue eyes. He stole the identity of the real Char Aznable (who is mostly identical to him except his brown eyes) to avoid being killed by Kycilia Zabi as a part of her plan to purge the Deikun family, and as such he chose to conceal his eyes to hide his real identity. He is the actual brother of Sayla Mass/Artesia Som Deikun and the true heir to Zeon. Char later becomes a very important member of the AEUG/Karaba alliance, eventually becoming its leader after the death of Blex Forer, but is reported M.I.A. during the Battle of Gryps. Years after The Gryps War he becomes the supreme leader of Neo Zeon.
