Trompe l'oeil (French for "deceives the eye") is a technique in painting and illustration where the artist uses perspective to create the illusion that the depicted subject or scene is real, as if the image surface was a window into a three-dimensional space. In it's most pronounced use, a character may appear to climb through this window or interact with the frame or border of the work.
