A watertight metal canister in which German soldiers during World War II carried their standard-issue gas masks. Or at least they were supposed to carry their gas masks in them. In practice, they tended to stash anything they wanted to keep dry in there, since poison gas was rarely if ever a problem on the battlefields of World War II.
