It's less jealousy and more of discouraged.

Doing something nice only to have someone immediately "one-up" you, making your deeds meanless, is very soul crushing.

Like a child trying to be nice and donating their $20 allowance only to see a businessman a second later give away a million.

I don't know if there's a similar tale/philosophy in Bhuddishm, but this makes me think of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesson_of_the_widow%27s_mite because of being born into a devoutly Christian family.
