I've always had Kikuko Inoue as Byakuren in my mind, but I'm okay with this as well.

From what I have learned, Taoism is very tolerant to everything. As an evidence, there was no major civil war over religion in the history of China, with the exception of the Taiping Rebellion, which is between (a very corrupted form of) Christianity and Confucianism.

Is Taoism a religion or a philosophy? I need a clearer picture here....

It started out as a philosophy, but it has been deified in subsequent generations. It has gods and there is worship, but there is no "orthodoxy", and the gods are absorbed from many sources: the founding philosophers, the folk religion, even a bunch from Buddhism.
The religious principle is roughly to maintain a moral life and to use alchemy and meditation to achieve personal form of utopia.
    Consider these statements:
-One's self, not the heaven, controls his own fate.
-One achieves utmost happiness through life, not afterlife.
-After achieving ascension, one can still choose to live amongst the masses.

The system of beliefs is not easily organized or politicized, and I read in a history book that Taoist shrines are much cheaper for the state than Buddhist ones, because they don't make huge buildings or carve large statues.
Given that Ancient Greek philosophers had their own groups of followers, and how much religion is defined by the image of Catholic church, I'd say Taoism and Confucianism are the least religious of all major religions.

Taoism had been fighting against Buddhism for quite a long time, one of the best example is the competition between Shaolin and Wudang in the world of martial arts, or Journey to the West, where Wukong who was pretty much Buddhism (studied under a dharma, later became Victorious Buddha) beat the shit outta the Taoists.

Both religions/philosophies arrived in Japan in the 7th century and became a serious threat to the Shintoism. At that time, Miko was the one trying to merge all three together, hence the "faith" was leeched from the Shintoism Native Gods, causing them to fade away. If you get the picture now, I believe it's historically true that both Byakuren and Miko are the Moriya's enemy. According to what Kanako, Suwako have been doing up until now, I wouldn't be surprised if they want to set both sides up to fight each other, then take all the faith.

Not sure about Suwako, but Kanako is the type that conquers. Generally speaking, a native goddess is ranked higher than a youkai, even if it's the Youkai Sage. And of course much higher than a human kid. She shouldn't be afraid of both Reimu and Yukari, the other forces won't be a threat. Oni, who only have 2 Devas (3 if Kasen really is one) spend all day drinking. The Vampires and Lunarian don't give a shit, although Remilia may help Reimu. Chireiden probably is under Kanako's command now, not at least being allies. The Yama won't interfere in a religion war, since she's under Gods, Saints and Buddhas altogether.

Eiki Siki is higher then the Moryia shrine gods. she is the Judge-sal of Gensokyou. But she would only act is either Chaos or Dharma get too powerful.

    Only quoting the relevant parts.
There were much rivalries between Taoism and Buddhism, yes, but there weren't bloody wars with millions of dead, or anything close to that.
Journey to the West is only a fictional work. And you know the story in details, you would know the following facts: (the spoiler is for Journey to the West, just in case someone is reading it)

-Wukong is born in a very Taoist fashion, being a rock absorbing vitality through the ages. As far as I know, Buddhism does not have the concept of inanimate object becoming a Youkai.
-Wukong studied first under a Taoist priest, and did not become a Buddhist monk until after he was imprisoned and freed.
-The Taoist deities captured Wukong with the help of Buddha, this shows that they have a cooperative relationship.
-The novel portraits the Buddhas as omnipotent and invincible, otherwise Wukong would probably beat the crap out of them too, as he has tried to.
-Throughout the journey Wukong would keep seeking help from both the Buddhist and the Taoist deities.

*For simplicity's sake, the name Wukong is used throughout. Though he was only given that name after being freed from his imprisonment.

Nope, the hidden story there was Wukong, a mere youkai beat the crap outta the Taoist Saints, from the Heavenly Warlords to the Heaven King himself. Only Buddha could stop him. Everyone who watched/read it would instantly put Buddhism much higher than Taoism. Great Three Saints couldn't do shit to Wukong, even made him stronger, while the Grand Buddha just flipped his hand and sealed him under Five Elements Mountains for 500 years.
Later in the journey, many "youkai" was originally the Taoist Saints' pets. And of course, the Buddhas again proved much better help than the Saints.
Religions had been fighting each others all the time, just that they didn't make a war. But they do fight in other ways.

Firstly, I'd like to reiterate that Journey to the West is only a fictional story.
Secondly, one being superior to the other does not imply conflict. They were not rivals and cooperated in the story.
Thirdly, the fact that they didn't make wars, is all I tried to say from the very beginning, to refute the title of the comic: "War between faiths".

    5% Buddhism
    Gensoukyou
    95% Taoism
    War between faiths
After we spread Taoism in Gensokyou…
Sorry, but shouldn’t you be worried here?
    Faith towards Buddhism will fall!
    Go ahead
But religious faith is personal choice isn’t it?
    Is that so?
