I'm not sure how to tag, but... based on the battle screen, this looks like it's from Lufia II. In The Fortress of Doom, if memory serves, the run away option is on the same menu as the spells and items, rather than appearing on the first, totally vertical menu.

Can't believe they're letting Square remake it.

Yeah, it's definitely II. The boss images are parodies of the ones from that game, not the first one.

Why does Marisa the Magician has 0MP, while Youmu as a swordfighter has 333MP?!

by English names, who's taking over whose roles:
Youmu = Maxim (makes sense)
Marisa = Guy (makes NO sense)
Alice = Selan (sure, though the YouAli implications is like... what, can you say crack pairing?)
Eirin = Artea (eh, why not)

That being said, the Seirensen cast would've made more sense as the Sinistrals, not SDM.

Based on their HP/MP and sprites:
Youmu is Maxim
Marisa is Guy
Alice is Selan
Eirin is Artea

Guy is the only one who doesn't use magic. Marisa and Youmu should probably be swapped in respect to MariAli.

Hmm... but the resolution and detail seems way too low, most noticeably for the menus and player sprites.

I'm still saying it's the first game, mainly because of how the characters appear. It's the same than in 1. In 2, they all appear looking at the enemy and have a capsule monster, too.

Er, I just saw my mistake, it is indeed from the second game. Derp.

Square-Enix didn't make it. They bought Taito, and the core of the original Estpolis II/Lufia II development team still worked there. S-E asked them to revive the series, so they came up with the remake on their own.

And it's been out for nearly a year, by the way.
