In the Post-Mysticism novel, there's a news article that talks about how shogi in Gensokyo and the outside world has changed due to different cultural developments, but I didn't think "making original rules" meant THIS!

That's the tengu, (and presumably, the kappa that play with them, as well,) not the oni. (Well, some oni probably play shogi, but apparently, not Suika.)

According to the article, the Tengu actually made the game much more complex because, being long-lived creatures with nothing better to do, they got really, really good at playing Shogi, so they had to make up new rules to make the game harder by making everything much more complex.

(The tengu were interested in what was supposed to be new pieces invented by humans during the intervening years, but they were mistaking things that were Shogi pieces for new rules, like having spies. They may have been confusing games like Stratego with Shogi.)

And just like that, RPG was born
