That was a cheap victory. I'm sorry, but I don't buy Mokou being able to defeat a Kyuubi AND a Nuke Launcher without any help. Because face it. Koishi did nothing. Ah well. Hopefully something better happens in the next chapter.

That "nothing" she did was exactly the difference between Mokou having to submit, and coming up with this improbable win.
Yes, I agree she shouldn't have been able to take Ran and Okuu by her offense alone. And yes, I was disappointed that Ran was essentially taken out in one shot, and that Koishi stayed in the background with the sole contribution of buying her partner time. At least she didn't come out of it unscathed.
TLDR, I'm glad Mokou and Koishi won, but disappointed with some of the contest's content.
The sad part is I would normally root for Mokou/Koishi, as they're two of my favorites, but they just had to be matched against Ran/Okuu, my two favorites. Yeah, weird matchup. Now I can't bring myself to root for them since I just spent the last month hoping they would lose....go Yukari, I guess?

Pretty much how i feel. I was hoping Koishi would show off some literal "mind fucking" powers, messing with her opponents minds, making them think they are each others enemies, ect. Really do hope Koishi isn't just a stealth person throughout the rest of the fights. Cannonly, her power is one of the most dangerous. destroying the mind leads to the body's destruction, if im remembering her powers right.
I believe my only problem with this series is the lack of usual elaboration when a certain key event happened. It would be more impactful if there was a scene with Chen (She's watching this) and a few words to Okuu before Ran passed out. Of course, this applies to the Tag Dream series as well, but since this series is not restricted by the 4koma format, it won't hurt to include them. Sure, it could be the artist's way of pacing, but I find Okuu going postal rather abruptly.
On the other hand, Hatate is going "Gununu" in the last panel, so fixed and tagged.

Considering that there was a Nuclear Bird and a Fire Bird causing mass explosions everywhere in the ring, I think she made the right choice as to do nothing and take cover since Ran sacrificed herself to save Okuu. Just because she can't be noticed, doesn't mean she can't get hit in the crossfire.
And to everyone complaining about Mokou's victory, you're forgetting something quite important. Mokou died more times than she bothered to count during this battle alone. Not even Patchouli (one of the weakest-bodied individuals we know) dies from a direct hit from Utsuho. If you feel Utsuho and Ran have been shown underpowered, I'd say Mokou has been shown quite ridiculously underpowered as well by being portrayed to have somehow managed to die in a danmaku battle. Can't deny her victory though, since a danmaku match isn't won by killing the opponent.
People don't die in fiction unless they don't...well...die. If a character isn't able to come back from a gibbing, they won't get gibbed. 's how stories like this work.
Kaguya and Mokou somehow inexplicably gain the ability to die from danmaku...since it doesn't stick. Doesn't say anything about how underpowered they are, and in fact may say something of the opposite considering she managed to maintain composure and concentration despite dying multiple times. Mokou is just a normal human beyond the powers granted by Hourai, so I guess she is kinda fragile if you don't take into account the whole irrevocable resurrection. In the case of immortals like Mokou, I guess, your stamina isn't really judged by -if- you die or not, but rather how many times you die before you give up.
Very true. In fact, what we normally refer to as lives in Touhou games are actually the willpower/motivation. Longer bosses are not necessarily more resilient but rather with a stronger willpower, so that they do not give up as easily as shorter bosses.

Not in Touhou. Mokou truly does "die" each time you defeat one of her spellcards.

I'll add that it's because canonically, she absolutely doesn't care about dying in any way, meaning that technically,if you manage to get in a situation where you are able to kill her (why would you do that I dunno :3 ) she WON'T EVEN BOTHER DODGING.Which is awesome and creepy at the same time.

It's not so much Moku powering through all her deaths, it's that, despite her dying so much, she didn't freaking twitch an eye at any of it. And she's canonically stated as saying dying and resurrecting freaking hurt (which is why she stopped fighting in IN, she was in so much pain from dying and reviving so much).

The sound effect all on its own is a meme? I thought it only applied when paired with the particular close-up facial expression. Separated from that, it's...just a grunt, isn't it?

Just tagging things as how this site handles it. If you don't find it appropriate, go ahead and take it to the forum.

Yeah, but in IN you killed her once for every one of her Spell Cards. Here she died, what? Twice? Three time? Four at the max unless Okuu's attack counted for multiple lives (ala Caliburn and Berzerker in F/SN). Even worse (for her enemies) those deaths were her being vaped, which was probably relatively quick and thus, less painful than killing her by, say, ripping out her liver and feeding it to your maid (which is what Remilia offered to do in Sakuya's IN route; Mokou comments that that would hurt, but she seemed pretty blase about it).
Although I'm quite disappointed with the fight i guess it's acceptable. Ran and Koishi could have done more than what's shown here(the latter might have a show-off in later fights). Maybe it's because Ran's ability is too vague and the artist didn't have much idea to use. I think that's why and also since the main part is Utsuho vs Mokou. I gotta agree that it's too fast. But it's quite reasonable. Mokou have thousand years of experience fighting other youkai and Kaguya while Utsuho just got her power weeks or even days before the event in SA. I doubt it's one year before DS takes place. So it's pretty much a fight between a veteran against quite a newbie. After thinking it like that, Utsuho losing is understandable. Even then, she put up a fight and give Mokou a hard time(though not really shown since the artist IS kinda fanboying her a bit too much). This, however show that for now Mokou wins, but if Utsuho actually go training, she might well surpassed Mokou with her untapped potential(so let's tap th-*nuke'd*). As for why she didn't use her signature moves, I guess it's more of not wanting to rather than can't. If she gets any higher than Mega(Giga,Peta,SS,AN,etc) it won't be pretty for the others since it's actually shown to KILL. So the most she can do is the charge/dive attack to minimize collateral damage. If she's able to use the above then Mokou would have nothing to counter it as long as she stay away. As for durability, I know it's not that impressive but in UNL Sanae story mode, she is shown to shrug off all the damage from Sanae(yeah, not too special, but still) like it was nothing after the fight. So she's actually quite sturdy. All in all it's okay. Let's just hope someone make another one with both of them, be it a fight or as team. I'll be reading this to see how it ends for now.
That aside, there's a new Touhou RPG with both of them as playable character. These two will never leave my party.
Well, I wanted to back you up if I could...but I got swallowed up in all the explosions and eruptions and nuclear fusions, and it almost killed me!Pant...Yeah, no kiddin'...Gnnh...Hff......wait, what the? Koishi!?But to think...it got this bad in just the first round...You-...where have you been all this time!?Ah...I see...
