Rei doesn't seem to be totally unpleased about the current situation she's in. Kinda like a case where when one gets into a situation one typically wouldn't openly get into but when actually in that situation have a sort of a guilty pleasure enjoying the situation.

Shinji sucks either way. He was a horrible character. Emo as hell. If I ever made an anime, I'd go against the modern flow and make the main character the go-to guy. The bad-ass of the series, instead of making some side character the bad-ass like they always end up doing. Same thing with DBZ. They made Goku the wimpy guy and Vegeta, who was basically the coolest in the series, was a side character. Same with FFVII. Cloud and Cid. Even though that was a game. Just about every anime out there follows this modern flow. Look at Wolfs Rain.
