It doesn't actually seem like that great an insult to me-- more like Hitomi's defending her pride, with a bit of noblesse oblige-style "I have a duty to help out a commoner who helped me in turn" feeling. An elitist notion, for sure, but not one intended to come off as an insult.

I think that's a direct quote from Arakawa Under the Bridge, actually.
