On 22nd August 2024, large demonstrations were held across multiple cities and settlements in Indonesia, in response to the Indonesian legislative assembly (DPR)'s intention to put to vote an election reform bill pertaining to local elections. These demonstrations were (and still are, as of posting this) often dispersed by police who resorted to tactics such as tear gas, shooting firecrackers and direct shielded charges through crowds. Despite the vote for the bill being cancelled on the same day (due to "not enough DPR representatives present to vote today"), demonstrations continue to this day as of posting, as this event inflated other major concerns regarding the upcoming nationwide local elections, as well as suspicions about the government.

Long story short, the local election bill was suspected to unfairly benefit outgoing President Jokowi's family and associated political groups. Among the controversial changes proposed in the bill was a proposal to change the age requirements for provincial governor candidacy, from requiring the candidate to be 30 years old at the time of filing the candidacy, to being 30 years at the time of taking office, meaning that, if passed, a candidate did not have to be 30y/o when beginning their campaign or even during a governor election itself. Jokowi's youngest son, Kaesang, who will only turn 30y/o on 25 December, was speculated to have been planning to run either directly in a provincial governor election or become a running mate. Jokowi's family has faced allegations of political dynasty for over a year, and the timing of this bill with Kaesang-related events inflamed suspicions.
