There is a type of tengu that can be mistaken for a kappa by description (not by appearance) because it is said to be water dwelling but then again even karasu (crow) tengu did not have beaks. No relation I can think of.

It's a (bad) pun. Tori is Japanese for bird, and her name is NiTORI.

If he were to make it an even worse pun there would have been two birds.
