As someone who has deleted several years worth of work from his hard drive earlier today, I think I can understand why artists do this.
I saw my older work as really poor, not to mention that I was getting really bogged down by trying to please people who I had no business trying to please in the first place, rather than creating things that I would personally enjoy. Basically, my older stuff was also an extension of my younger, more foolish self who was too afraid to express himself.
So I basically wanted to start a new again and begin creating in the way that I originally did before I started listening to bad advice, so to speak. So far it's been much better for me.
Basically, think of it as the "cutting off your long hair makes you a different person" cliche instead of cutting hair you're deleting stuff.
Of course, this was my reason for doing it. I don't know why this artist did it, but it's just some food for thought.
