It's like watching the monster truck scene in Idiocracy and thinking how cool it would be if something like that actually existed. When Gainax made that scene, Imaishi and Yoshinari looked directly into your eyes and said "Go ahead. Make porn of these 0-dimensional characters that we drew like Powerpuff Girls. We dare you," and at least a dozen fish bit right onto the hook without so much as looking sideways at the bait.

Except that's wrong, because the premise of the characters, plus and premise of the show, plus the more realistic mini-sequences add up to make a franchise that doesn't really need any help being sexualized. It's Gainax doing American cartoons in a way that can only be done in Japan.

My point being, I find it hard to believe anyone would find it hard to believe that there would be porn of this show.

Yes. Which is why they helpfully provided the ultra-realistic/normal versions of the 2 girls - just to conceal the dare that much more effectively.

I don't think Gainax cared.
They just wanted to make something fun of which they know the people will like (and they probably enjoy it themselves). You know, like Gurren Lagann, only the mix of erotica and action is reversed here.
