I've never really thought of this before but, does the tail REALLY grow out of the back above the butt?

As long as 1) we're seriously discussing humanoid life forms with tails and 2) we're on Danbooru, I'd say it's all conjecture.

The tail is an extension on the spine so if humanoids were to have a tail that's most likely where it would come from.

I wonder if maybe the question didn't expect the tail to emerge a little lower?...

I always thought that a "tail" would appear from the "tailbone" wouldn't that make sense?

If humans walked around hunched over, sure it'd make sense. Otherwise, its a basic balance/weight problem (to say nothing about "what would we use it for?").

I believe the tailbone extends to just around the top of the butt, so it makes sense.

I think so, too. Have a look at an illustration of the vertabral column. In non-tailed humans, the tailbone arches downwards. In kemonomimi mode it would be a tail that begins in the same place. Therefore I would expect Nazrin’s tail to grow out of her body at the top end of the butt crack, and not above it, like in the picture above, where it starts in the middle of the lumbar region.
