For stability while holding the rifle in a standing position.

Depends entirely on the construction. Some platforms were notorious for failures to feed caused by holding the firearm by the magazine (the resulting tilt caused the cartridge to miss the feed ramp).

The SVD doesn't suffer from this, though.
