Cao Cao appeared to have a thing for married women. Like dk said, he lost Dian Wei because a warlord named Zhang Xiu who had surrendered to him tried to kill him as revenge for Cao Cao taking Xiu's widowed aunt as a concubine, and Wei died protecting Cao. Of course, he was also said to lust after the Qiao sisters who were, respectively, Sun Ce's widow and Zhou Yu's wife, and Zhuge Liang used that rumor to motivate Yu to call for the Wu-Shu alliance that repelled Cao Cao at the Battle of the Red Cliffs. Those are just the ones I know of. Cao Cao had over a dozen wives and concubines, and those are just the ones we have records of, and I imagine a number of those were already mothers when he took them.
