If what I heard was correct, (and it was on /v/ so, yeah) they're going to use the Catherine engine for Persona 5. I think this was just Atlus' attempt to bring something new to the PS3 before bringing out the big guns.
what? really?? persona 5 will be a puzzle action how-the-fuck-i-can-climb-this-and-dodge-my-way-out type of game? well as long its not some moblie phone game, its okay i guess
An engine isn't the form the game takes. If I recall correctly, Spider-man 2 used the Tony Hawk Pro Skater engine, for example. The engine has more to do with character models and how they interact with the environment than specific gameplay mechanics.

The Atlus Persona Team created this game. It was started when work on Persona 4 was nearly complete. The style that the team is know for shows up in this game. It's a must have for Persona fans. I love it.

This actually reminds me of a time I saw someone arguing JRPGs were cliche because their game engines always used the same classic [fire, water, wind, etc.] elements. Took me awhile to wrap my head around that one.
