Regarding the whisky she mentions in her lines and seen in the event banner:
Her second commander, Lt Cdr. Mitsuma Itakura, brought a bottle of whisky to Vice Admiral Tomoshige Samejima as a gift during one of I-41’s transport runs to Buin in 1944. Itakura (who had a drinking problem and had a reputation for being a troublemaker) had punched him back in 1935 while serving on Mogami in a fit of drunken annoyance and as a result of Samejima’s mercy, avoided severe punishment and was only transferred to another ship. Itakura made it a personal mission to undertake particularly dangerous transport runs to Bougainville when he realized that Samejima was the head of the 8th Fleet headquarters on the island.
When Itakura visited him in the hospital in 1957, the now terminally ill Samejima pointed to the corner of the room and there sat the same whisky bottle with a flower in it. His wife mentioned that when she had asked about why he had brought the bottle back after the war, Samejima responded:
This is something Captain Itakura risked his life to bring to Buin. I couldn't let go of this one thing.
He had kept and treasured the whisky bottle till the day he passed.
