As I understand it, the one that gets treated as the parent is the older upload.

really? i had always assumed (and seeing as how the mods get on my ass for it) its the different source links, and certain ones take higher priority, if theyre both like, showing the same amount

Usually the image that shows more of the drawing tends to have a higher priority than an image that shows less (can see this version is cropped more on the bottom than the other version). Other factors are usually which version has a higher resolution, which version has fewer compression artifacts, which version is the latest revision, etc. Sources don't really matter, but some sources tend to more likely have higher quality releases than other sources which is why some sources might appear to have higher priority than others.
