I don't know anything about the guy except he identifies as socialist, which makes me sympathetic. If he was a leftist with a spine, he would channel Max Stirner's egoism as an explanation for his fetishes (it pleases me, therefore I partake, without harming another's rights nothing more)

The reason it became a drama is because he himself would chastise and condemn people for liking lolis, and he himself would call them pedos. This didn't reveal him to be a pedo, it revealed him to be a hypocrite. He made bad excuses because confidently saying "Yeah, and?" would've backfired horribly. He was part of the very hysteria you mention, yet also part of the very group he incited hysteria towards. There was no owning it unless he owned being a hypocrite too.

After watching videos on him, apparently he actually spent a lot of time defending lolicon content. Which just leaves me massively confused. Was he against it or not? In fact, he apparently outright defends actual CP and adults having sexual relations with children.
I probably don't have nearly enough context on this situation, but it kinda feels like all this has really done is give people even more ammunition to conflate real CP and lolicon stuff.
