This seem to be a coloring of this photograph. According to the caption, the Val pictured would hit the Hornet's stack and then the flight deck (although there's no way of knowing if the description is accurate)

Honestly that damage was cosmetic compared to the torpedo hits Commander Murata and co made on her.
