Personally I prefer an underwater base or orbiting space station over the underground lair.

Due to this sudden realisation, I've posthumously pardoned all my rookies and their terrible aim; it probably does take a lot of practice to shoot well when your laser rifle shots curve all over the bloody place.

The player controlled X-Com, a human defense force against the alien menace, and all their secret bases were underground with the only access points being the hangars, and more relevantly, the futuristic access lift.
