I forget what the story behind it is, but they're the type Tengu are known for wearing, which Aya and Hatate are. An example of the normal ones would be the geta Kogasa wears.
Ok, it was funny at first, but now this is getting old. Demons dont make sense. This is beyond the whole Gensokyou thing. All mythology, not just japanese ones always have things that dont make sense.

There is a wide variety in style of geta. The most common variety has two shorter 'teeth' and is quite easy to use. The single long tooth is associated with the tengu, who are known for their supernatural strength and agility.
The style of geta pictured would not be practical simply due to the lack of even distribution of weight on the foot. A thicker sole is required, as is shown on actual geta.
