Can you make a tutorial on how to do this? I'm experienced with 3d software, but this puzzles me. :|

Here is a 3D turntable to give you an idea of how it is made. This is my first time making one of these so I dont have a tutorial.

Hm... so did you just construct (relatively) flat planes in to their respective shapes and then skin them to a set of bones?

Yep, and try to make sure the skin wights match on the overlapping parts of the mesh.
