If someone knows a better comparative in english please correct for me.

I don't add the "sound effect" translation because I'm not very good in Katakana (and I don't know good comparatives for them).

"higu" is the sound someone's voice makes when their breath hitches, like when they're sobbing.

"yaaa" isn't always a pained yell, but in this context it is one.

As for the katakana... Dude, just study. It's 46 symbols, plus little modifying marks on some of them. They're all simple and phonetic, so you should have no trouble learning them.
Just watch out for the difference between シ (shi) and ツ (tsu), and between ソ (so) and ン (n).
